Joanna Cea Consulting is carrying out an initiative called Non-Extractive Finance Global: an initiative to assess opportunities for moving non-extractive finance in the Global South, grounded in learning from past experiments in the sector. This initiative aims to lean into learnings from past experiments such as the Buen Vivir Fund, as well as from the ongoing work—and constant evolution—of various US investment vehicles at the forefront of reimagining how we fund in reparative, power-sharing ways, to assess how non-extractive financing could be in service to and amplify alternative economy initiatives across the Global South. We plan to deepen our analysis and assessment of opportunities within specific Global South regions where our team has strong connections (Asia and Latin America) as well as learn from other geographies that have deep histories with outside capital flow that have had harmful outcomes, such as in parts of the Africa region. The project will culminate in the creation of a publicly accessible comprehensive report and several free-of-charge learning events, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration toward filling gaps in access to non-extractive capital in the Global South.
